I’ll start. My Celica, a RWD coupe.... They chose the brown interior instead of the blue. White paint with brown interior. Perhaps he was going for the sportiness of a coupe, but the ambience of a Camry.

Mine: 2008 Chevy Malibu with...literally everything. I know the 1st buyer personally and he had an A6 previously and wanted something new, so he let his friend the dealer make it with his budget.

I’ve grown to hate the white/blue combination. Every pre facelift w124 wagon I find that’s clean seems to be white/blue and its terrible.

My car was bought new in FL, I assume by an old couple. My guess is they wanted the nicest Miata possible because the M-edition cars have all the bells and whistles that were available for a Miata. But its a Miata so that isn’t saying much.

The first owner of my car was a lawyer.
My car has every option available in the North American market.

He or she was apparently thinking “Must. Check. All. Boxes.”
Or he was thinking about his buddy at the golf course who was going around bragging how his new LS400 was so much better than all their S-Classes, and decided to one-up him.

My car was bought in Bellevue. Fully-loaded goodness.

I wonder all the time why my Bentley has pink leather interior.

Yeah, I don’t know what this asshole was thinking with this Jetta!
Nah, but I’ll do my old A6.
The doctor that originally bought it did good. Fully loaded, melange interior, Racing Green Pearl and a six speed manual. He did everything perfectly.

Silver si coupe
With black cloth seats

Some asshole spec’d mine with orange seats.

Those are the reddest-orange seats ever.

The fools who bought mine didn’t pay the couple grand extra to put a body kit, great wheels and big ol’ turbo on it. Also a ‘systems monitor’ that had a little LCD representation of the car and lights, doors, etc...LIKE A TESLA.

First owner of my 5th gen was in Toledo. They went for the OEM lip kit (ridiculously rare), factory tint, and that’s it. No spoiler, no fogs, no leather. Tan interior stopped being offered in Preludes in 1998, and from 94-98 it was only available with green or beige ones.
The 3rd gen spent most of its life in the DC suburbs. I salute the person who chose black and tan. No options except for an arm rest.

For whatever reason, they photograph red. They really are orange, a reddish-orange, but they are orange.

Thank god there is no leather

I think about this all the time. My car: 07 Altima 2.5S. It has a 6spd manual so it’s a basic model but somehow has a sunroof, power driver’s seat, leather steering wheel with audio controls and rear spoiler, alloy wheels (steelies and covers were standard) and the original owner couldn’t be bothered to order the car with ABS. IT WAS A $200ish OPTION!
![]() 05/01/2016 at 17:05 |

My crown vic was bought by the police department so it’s not a lot to question, though the lack of ABS is a little surprising.
I do wonder why they went with the blue interior, though.
The Chevelle on the other hand is a very practical, reasonable family car - small V8, A/C, automatic. It actually has a lot in common with the crown vic in hindsight.

Let me guess. All the post MOPF (Modellpflege) models are silver/black?

Mine had to be the very boring kind of rich person. I’m thinking like, a retired CPA who made some very sound investments. I’ve got all the tech options on a very expensive car, but none of the aesthetic upgrades.
“I want that weird cruise control that brakes and accelerates, throw in the four-seat package with memory on everything too. What? $5,000 for bumpers that make it harder to go over speed bumps and bigger wheels with more expensive tires? Do you think me mad!? $10,000 for what?! More color combinations?! The definition of frivolity!”
![]() 05/01/2016 at 17:09 |

All the options available. Beige leather everything, t-tops, 2+2, non-turbo. Still low mileage. It had to be a garaged weekend cruiser for a wealthy individual in 1987, instead of the abused sports car it could have been. But that’s why its worked out well for me so far. Oh, and a manual. So person was either practical and/or enjoyed driving in general. Much like myself.

Much of the time the original owner doesn’t spec the car. My ‘87 300D was dark blue. I hate dark blue cars. But they wanted it off the lot by year’s end, it hadn’t sold b/c tex not leather, and I got a great deal. Same w/ my ‘97 SHO - it was sitting there because it had a cloth interior. If I had ordered it, it would have been white and not had those hideous chrome wheels.

Red NA with black cloth. He was probably thinking “I want exactly the same Miata everyone else is buying!"

Blue car, blue and white deluxe interior, automatic, tinted windows, t tops, ac, chrome trim, nothing else.
Definitely a cruiser/chick magnet.

‘86 VW Scirocco. Optioned with A/C, power mirrors and cruise control, but no power windows or central locking.

I like to imagine Peggy, the original owner of my M3 (it’s cool what information you find in service manuals), was a semi-successful lawyer (based on the scratches on the back of one of my rear “oh shit” handles from a hanger) in a small Illinois town and decided to treat herself with a new M3, because she had a little bit of a need for speed. She didn’t want to stand out too much so she bought a silver sedan model with the standard wheels but added a spoiler for a little extra pizzazz. Automatic of course. Selected literally every option available except the factory alarm system and tilt wheel. Black leather because it was easy to clean and wouldn’t age terribly like the white leather. Harman Kardon stereo because she liked her tunes. Heated seats for those cold Illinois winter mornings.
It’s weird I have this all thought out in my head.

My car was on the lot for over a year before we bought it.
Base model Sport, white, with steelies, MySky, A/C and Uconnect package. I don’t know why the dealer ordered it that way but it’s no surprise that we got a deal on it.

The p/0 of my C70 was awesome, because they chose the very dark Magic Blue exterior, which is very rare, out of the few C70s I see they’re all baby blue or red. It looks way better in dark colors. And they only drove it 50,000 miles in nearly 7 years. Thank you!!

To be fair, this was before BMW went option crazy and in North America the only choices were different engines.

The original owner of my vehicle probably wanted something very close to a fleet truck, but silver with a blue interior, so it didn’t look like a fleet truck.

Mine’s just a regular ‘02 silver Miata with LS package, which is basically a check-all box for tan-colored interior and top, leather, stereo, suspension upgrades, 16" wheels (which I later sold off). It’s sadly not a Laser Blue special option, but those are hen’s teeth. I’ve already seen 4 exact versions of my Miata...before I started modding mine.

Post facelift. The Mercedes people in Stuttgart called their facelifts Modellpflege.

Wow, I had thought ABS had been required for like 20 years, but apparently in the US it didn’t become mandatory until 2011. It’s probably the best safety value in cars after seatbelts, especially considering the implementing stability control is basically free once you have the ABS hardware.

Mine sprung for the several hundred dollar air conditioning option, but didn’t spent the extra 20 on a tach. On a manual car.

“ Ever wonder what the original owner of your car was thinking when they chose their options? ”
They didn’t, the manufacture sent them to dealers that way. Most people don’t special order cars.

Yes. You bought a $137,000 Meredes Benz SL600 Sport in 1997. The Panorama hard top was first introduced as one of many new features for this model year. You decided, “I dont need that.”
Bastard.

The only options for my car were, a Sunroof, and a CD player. They got the Sunroof, but not the CD player. Understandable as it was a 500 dollar option. In 1991. That’s 875 in today’s dollars, probably the average price of a Nav option now.
Another dealer installed option was mudflaps which I wish they had opted for, as they are like 250-300 bucks now.

Mine was the exact opposite. Designo interior and paint, AMG package wheels and tires, but almost no “tech” upgrades. No rear seat comfort options either. Just bolstering and heating. They're not even ventilated.

Whoever bought my Corolla splurged on the convenience package (I think that’s the name, I have the window sticker in the glove box) with power windows (ooh) AM/FM/4 speakers (ahh) and 14" wheels.
My 530i was originally a lease. They got the comfort package, winter package, navigation, but not a folding seat or trunk pass through.

I always wonder what the factory workers thought. When they were building BMW 7 Series’, did they picture Beethoven quietly filling the cabin and it flew down the Autobahn and the driver making business calls? Surely they didn’t predict two-bit drug dealers putting 26" wheels and chameleon paint (see also: Caddy DTS, etc) on them. They probably smiled and said “wow, this DeVille is a magnificent machine, how lucky am I to be fitting the Landau roof? What could ever top this? Surely it’ll still be this nice in 15 years"
